Somewhere, on the globe, every 18 seconds atleast someone is involved in a motor vehicle accident and every 11 minutes someone dies due to road accidents in the world, go the stats.
Surely this must make it tough for one not to be the unlucky fella. But it is not that difficult, here are some of the ways you can ensure your safety whilst driving on the roads
.Be cautions at intersections, a danger zone. There are a lot of distractions at Intersections, making them be risky. There are always bound to be turning cars, pedestrians and red-light runners. To stay safe do the following:
•Steer clear of erratic drivers. Let a tailgater pass you.
•Keep your eyes on the road. Talking on a cell phone or reading a map can distract you and lead to an accident. It may seem less risky because you surely indulge yourself in this habit on a frequent basis, but trust us, you cannot be doing it for for 10 years from now without any consequences: Keep in mind that whilst you are doing that, a distracted driver might also be near you. Drive cautiously.
•Be alert near parked cars. Someone could open a car door or pull out in front of you.
•Don’t drive sleep-deprived. If you become drowsy, pull up on the side of the road and get some rest. Sleep is not a matter of willpower, but a biological need.
•When passing another car, get past the driver’s blind spot as quickly and safely as possible.
•Know your brakes. Most cars have antilock brakes, which require a driver to apply a firm and continuous pressure on the pedal.
•In stormy weather, leave extra space between you and the car ahead. In fact even when driving in dry weather you still have to make sure you leave enough space between your car and the one in front, that is your braking distance. Leave at least a 4 seconds braking distance between yourself and the fella in front. How do you calculate that? From where you are passing, mentally mark the point (by a tree, a spot on the road or anything you see around that point) where the vehicle in front is and start counting from 1 to four and see if by the time you reach four you have reached the point you marked or not. If you have already passed the point by the time you reach four, watch out, but if you have already reached 5 or 6 by the time you reach your point marker, maintain that space that is you are driving safely in terms of breaking distance at least.
•Don’t drive through water. A small amount of water can disable a vehicle in seconds.
•Don’t forget the basics: Buckle your seatbelt, limit loose objects in your car and lock your doors.
